With hyperopia the eye focuses light behind the retina. Young eyes can often compensate by working harder, which is why the first signs are frequently eyestrain, headaches or trouble concentrating on near tasks rather than obvious blur.
Spectacles or contact lenses relax that extra effort. Children with uncorrected hyperopia may struggle with reading, so an examination is worthwhile if a child avoids close work.
