Presbyopia

From around the age of 40 the eye's lens becomes less flexible, and small print drifts further away before it comes into focus.

Presbyopia is a normal part of ageing. The lens inside the eye stiffens, so it can no longer change shape enough to focus on close objects. Holding a phone or menu at arm's length is the classic sign.

Reading spectacles, multifocal lenses or multifocal contact lenses restore comfortable near vision. Because the change continues over the years, the prescription is reviewed every one to two years.
